What is Yoga?
The word yoga derives from the sanskrit ‘yuj’ meaning union or yoke. Yoga is an ancient practice which creates a union of body, mind and spirit through physical poses (asana), breath (pranayama) and meditation techniques.
I’m new to yoga. Where should I start?
It is best to start in a beginners or mixed ability class with a qualified yoga instructor who can ensure that you practice safely whilst you learn. All my classes cater for beginners as well as those who have more experience of yoga and are an ideal place to start your yoga journey. With clear instructions and plenty of options to choose from, as you will have time to work through poses, breathing and relaxation in detail with a qualified instructor.
What classes do you offer?
I teach yoga at venues across Borrowash, Ockbrook and Spondon. My classes are based on vinyasa flow practice but I draw on may different types of yoga, along with philosophy and teachings from the natural world. With daytime and evening classes, there is sure to be an option that suits you.
What should I bring?
All equipment will be provided but you may want to bring a drink and also warmer clothes e.g. jumper or hoodie / socks or a blanket to keep warm in the relaxation sections of the class.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes that you can move in e.g. leggings, joggers, T-shirt. We generally practice with bare feet but many sports shops do sell special non-slip socks for yoga practice.
Can I eat before class?
Yoga is a physical practice so I don’t recommend eating for up to an hour before practice.
Do you offer private classes?
Yes. I teach private classes for up to 2 people at a time. Information is available on my website. If you want to have a bespoke session for more than this, whether that’s for a special event, or as a regular practice, please contact me directly at clarehodgson68@gmail.com or 07850 045242.
Do you have a place where I can change clothing?
I use community rather than sporting venues so there are not designated changing rooms. All venues have toilet facilities where you can change privately.
What if I'm running late?
What about parking?
The venues that I use generally have free parking either on site or on nearby streets. All vehicles are parked at your own risk.
How much yoga experience do I need?
You do not need any experience at all to join my classes, courses or retreats.
If you are worried about whether you will be able to undertake the practice, do contact me directly either by email clarehodgson68@gmail.com or 07850 045242 and I will answer any individual questions that you have.
How many students are in a course?
I have places for between 12-16 people in each class, depending on the size of the room. This is to make sure that there is always enough space to feel safe and to practice comfortably.
What style of yoga will I be learning?
My teaching is largely based on a style of yoga called Vinyasa Flow. This is a style of yoga where the transitions and pauses between poses are as important as the poses themselves. It has been described as a moving meditation, and also allows us to be very creative in how we use the tools of yoga in daily practice. My style is best described as strong but gentle, and I love to introduce the philosophy and physiology of yoga too, so each class is highly individual.
