Frequently asked questions
Yoga is an ancient practice which creates a union of body, mind and spirit through physical shapes and movements, breath and meditation techniques.
There are many types of yoga, some are more physical and some are gentler, concentrating on slower movements and more on meditation and breathing.
I practice embodied yoga which means that we learn to be very aware of our physical and energetic bodies, and work from exactly where we are each time. I may use props like yoga bricks and blocks, yoga straps and tennis balls so that you can have a wide experience and feel fully supported in class.
It is best to start in a beginners or mixed ability class with a qualified yoga instructor who can ensure that you practice safely whilst you learn.
If you are looking for a more energetic class then you may be interested in styles like ashtanga yoga or vinyasa flow.
If you prefer to work at a slower pace but still with strength and flexibility, then choose a hatha or slow flow class.
All my classes cater for beginners as well as those who have more experience of yoga and are an ideal place to start your yoga journey.
I teach yoga at venues across Borrowash, Ockbrook and Spondon.
My classes are based on hatha, slower flow styles and yin yoga. However, I draw on many different types of yoga, along with philosophy and teachings from the natural world. I also teach chair yoga, which uses props such as chairs, straps and yoga bricks to facilitate a gentle but enlivening practice.
I encourage you to explore your own body and breath, their sensations and what this means for your health and well being. This is called embodied yoga. You always have the option to do as much or as little as you wish, with choices for all the shapes we practice. Yoga meets you where you are and there are no perfect shapes, only the ones that are perfect for your body.
With daytime and evening classes, there is sure to be an option that suits you.
Please bring your own mat. All other equipment will be provided.
You may want to bring a drink and also warmer clothes e.g. jumper or hoodie / socks or a blanket to keep warm in the relaxation sections of the class.
I have a small number of mats that can be used for a small fee of £2 per class. All the money raised from mat hire is donated to The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust which rescues orphaned elephants.
Comfortable clothes that you can move in e.g. leggings, joggers, T-shirt. We generally practice with bare feet but many sports shops do sell special non-slip socks for yoga practice.
Yoga is a physical practice so I don’t recommend eating for up to an hour before practice.
Yes. I teach bespoke and private classes for up to 3 people at a time.
Prices start at £30 per hour and may vary depending on venue and the numbers of people booking.
For more information, please contact me at info@yogabyclare.co.uk.
I use community rather than sporting venues so generally there are not designated changing rooms. All venues have toilet facilities where you can change privately.
Please make every effort to arrive 10 minutes before the class is due to start.
I do recognise that life can get in the way of good intentions, so if you are running late, please let me know as soon as possible. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you may not be able to join. This is for your own safety as you will have missed warming up.
Please join the class quietly when you do arrive. I may request that you wait until an appropriate time to join e.g. if we are meditating.
The venues that I use generally have free parking either on site or on nearby streets. All vehicles are parked at your own risk.
You do not need any experience at all to join my classes, courses or retreats.
If you are worried about whether you will be able to undertake the practice, do contact me directly either by email info@yogabyclare.co.uk or by using my contact form.
I have places for between 12-15 people in each class, depending on the size of the room. This is to make sure that there is always enough space to feel safe and to practice comfortably.
My teaching is largely based on hatha, gentle flow and yin styles.
I work in a trauma informed style and practice a technique called embodied yoga which encourages you to fully experience your body and breath as we take different shapes and movements. We practice together and my aim is for you to make your own choices about your yoga.
My style is best described as strong but gentle, and I love to introduce the philosophy and physiology of yoga too, so each class is highly individual and tailored to the needs of students.
